Unpacking Judge Masipa's 'lenient' judgment on Pistorius

Judge Thokozile Masipa's 6 year sentence for Oscar Pistorius' murder conviction for killing Reeva Steenkamp has been met with criticism by South Africans.

In the sentence, which many have called lenient, Masipa said Pistorius still has an opportunity to be rehabilitated and has shown remorse for the February 14 shooting in 2013 at his Silverlakes home in Pretoria.

A conviction for murder carries a minimum 15-year sentence and a maximum 20-year sentence. However, Masipa stated that the mitigating circumstances outweighed the aggravating factors.
