ANCWL label Pistorius sentence an 'insult', and no appeal from defence

The legal team representing Oscar Pistorius has confirmed that they will not be appealing his jail term.

This comes after Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced him to six years imprisonment for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Masipa departed from the prescribed sentence (a minimum of 15 years), stating that the mitigating factors in the case outweighed the aggravating factors.

EWN's Gia Nicolaides reports that Pistorius was expressionless as his sentence was handed down.

He didn't seem as emotional as he was the last he appeared in court... It would seem that he has accepted the sentence.

Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter

Pistorius is eligible for parole once he has served at least half of his sentence, Nicolaides explains.

Meanwhile, the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) says its saddened and offended by the outcome of the sentencing proceedings.

ANCWL spokesperson Jacqui Mofokeng says the league will consult with experts for a legal opinion on the full judgment.

It's an insult to women and to the Steenkamp family... It's an emotional blow.
