SABC board chair says critics (including ANC members) have ulterior motives

Chair of the SABC board, Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe, has spoken out against the criticism from the ANC’s Jackson Mthembu and other political parties.

This comes after Mthembu labelled the SABC broadcast ban on violent protest as censorship, and called into question the appointment of COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

I feel that the attack is wrong, and trying to detract from our public service mandate.

Maguvhe believes that SABC critics, both from other media organisations and political parties, have ulterior motives.

Some of these people have business interest. They want to see the SABC collapsing, so they can get their hands on channels and radio stations.

According to Maguvhe, the broadcast ban is an editorial decision and should not be mistaken for SABC policy.

He is adamant that the public broadcaster made a responsible decision by forbidding violent footage, which he believes fuels further anarchy.

Maguvhe says that research evidence is available to substantiate the SABC's theory that reporting on violent protests perpetuates the situation.

He explains that the public broadcaster consulted with various stakeholders on the matter, despite reports indicating otherwise.
