The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Jack Hammer CEO Debbie Goodman-Bhyat.
Goodman-Bhyat discussed the upsides of taking a sabbatical and what to consider before deciding to take one.
She also touched on these five points:
What a sabbatical is (and what it is not - e.g. it’s NOT the period between jobs when you’re looking for new employment).
How does a sabbatical reflect on your career track record? (More than one over a five-year period at the same employer is unlikely; a sabbatical at an early stage in your career is NOT good; frequent sabbaticals show either a lack of resilience, low attention span or some other kind of instability.)
As an employer, when should you offer a sabbatical? (In response to a request from a valued employee; in response to a resignation from a valued employee where the issue could be remedied by some time out; as a retention tool for long service in organisations occupied by millennials/Generation Ys)
If you take a sabbatical, what should you expect upon your return? (Nothing stays the same – expect change, different people, different managers, different portfolios or a new role.)
- When should you decline an offer of a sabbatical? (If you have no intention of returning, if your reasons for wanting to take a break are issues that will not be solved by the sabbatical period alone.)
