Masipa didn't prove that 'extenuating circumstances' justified lenient sentence

Despite the attempt to present a balanced judgment, legal expert Tyrone Maseko believes that Judge Thokozile Masipa handed down a lenient sentence for Oscar Pistorius.

Pistorius was sentenced to six years imprisonment for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Masipa departed from the prescribed sentence (a minimum of 15 years), stating that the mitigating factors in the case outweighed the aggravating factors.

However, Maseko says Masipa did not lay out the extenuating circumstances in a compelling manner, that would fully justify the lenient sentence.

What we are really interested in, is to understand the justification of how you depart from the 15 year sentence and get to [six years].

According to Maseko, the sentence in the high profile case has failed to act as a deterrent for South Africans.

He has also cautioned the public from comparing Oscar Pistorius' case to other cases such as that of musician Jub Jub (real name Molemo Maarohanye).
