Emfuleni Municipality's acting municipal manager, Yunus Chamda, has insisted on a salary cut after an increase that saw his earnings jump from R 1.4 million to R 2.4 million.
Chamda received the increase after being seconded to the Kwa-Zulu Natal region from Sedibeng Municipality, compelling him to approach the Remuneration Committee with his request.
702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi spoke to him regarding his reasons for going out of his way to earn less.
The Reumeration Committee has recently decreased his earnings to R 1.9 million as the organisational hierarchy doesn't allow for an arrangement where Chamda earns less than the municipality's COO, who earns R 1.8 million.

I'm serving a community of many unemployed people and living in dire conditions. Yes, everybody would like to have more money but there needs to be some sense and balance.— Yunus Chamda, Emfuleni Municipality
You have to leave by example. I should start by making some sacrifices myself.— Yunus Chamda, Emfuleni Municipality
