It is a government at war with it's own people - Zim journalist

Elias Mambo, investigative journalist with The Zimbabwe Independent, is on the line with CapeTalk's Mike Wills (standing in for John Maytham) about the stay-away and the latest situation in Zimbabwe.

Yesterday the stay-away was very successful.

This, despite what he says was a clampdown on social media and cellphone communications.

They deployed massive military personnel, the anti-riot police,...so it was really a government that was at war with it's own people.

Mambo says one of the leaders of the social movement that has been at the forefront of Shutdown Zimbabwe is placing an ultimatum to Zanu-PF government.

They are saying if it doesn't listen to their demands, then next week Wednesday and Thursday, there is likely to be another mass protest.

He says the social movement is being lead by a local pastor, not affiliated to any political party.

They are very vibrant on social media.

Mambo was himself detained yesterday during the protests, while reporting and photographing the victims of police brutality. He says police insisted they delete the images which they complied with. But he says, the images had already been disseminated online, and were spreading via social media.
