Hours left to object to candidates in the running for Public Protector

South Africans have until 4pm this afternoon to make submissions objecting to any of the candidates in the running for the next Public Protector. EWN's Rahima Essop talks to CapeTalks's Charlotte Kilbane (standing in for Pippa Hudson) about the list of about 64 candidates nominated for the position.

As Thuli Madonsela's term draws to a close in October, all eyes are on who will fill her shoes.

Among the names of those nominated who have for various reasons refused, are Graca Machel, Nhlanhla Nene and NPA prosecutor Gerrie Nel.

But those on the list who have accepted nomination are Western Cape High Court Judge Seraj Desai, Deputy Public protector Kevin Malunga, and outspoken Constitutional law expert Pierre de Vos.

Essop says there has been a delay in shortlisting candidates, as Members of Parliament are on the campaign trail, and currently all over the country.

The deadline for the ad hoc parliamentary committee to table its preferred candidate to the National Assembly is August 30.

On the parliamentary website, you find candidates names and curriculum vitae as well as how to make submissions.

Corruption Watch has led a campaign to encourage public participation in this process and will be submitting a dossier to Parliament before the 4 pm deadline today.
