The Friday Stand-In 2016

Pioneering social activist Zackie Achmat is your next #FridayStandIn

Social activist and Treatment Action Campaign co-founder, Zackie Achmat has been an activist since he was 14. His activism kicked off during the 1976 uprising against Bantu Education.

During the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 90s, Achmat was a pioneer, working tirelessly to bring treatment to much needed sufferers. He took the fight for affordable and accessible antiretroviral [ARV] drugs to governments and big pharmaceuticals.

He took a personal stand, and as a protest against drug companies and discriminatory health policies, he decided not to take his ARV drugs, regardless of being very sick.

His activism has not only been around public health issues, He is also the co-founder of the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality.

Zackie's current work focuses on urban land issues. He is deeply committed to creating cities and communities that are open to all regardless of class or race. He works with the organisation Ndifuna Ukwazi, which means 'dare to know', and campaigns for social justice and affordable housing for all.
