The University of Witwatersrand is South Africa's best tertiary institution, according to a list released by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been ranked second, with Stellenbosch University coming in third.
At the same time, Wits has been ranked 176th in the world on the CWUR 2016 list.
Wits Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Zeblon Vilakazi has commended the five South African universities who have made it among the top 600 tertiary institutions in the world.
He says that, in total, there approximately 20 000 universities internationally.
However, Vilakazi cautioned that global university rankings do not solely determine the quality of education at universities.
He says the rankings are only one indicator, amid many challenges facing South African universities.
One need to take these rankings with a measure of circumspection.— Prof Zeblon Vilakazi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research at Wits
