Tributes pour in for race car champ Gugu Zulu

South African racing car driver Gugu Zulu has died just as he was preparing to summit Kilimanjaro for Mandela Day.

The 38-year-old was part of the Trek4Mandela initiative, but suffered breathing problems while on the mountain and was brought down on Sunday night.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation says that Zulu was at the base camp with the rest of the team when medical experts attended to him and decided to take him to hospital.

The remaining over 40 team members continued the summit, and they have not yet been informed of his untimely passing.

Spokesperson Neeran Naidoo says that the foundation extends its condolences to loved ones as authorities work to repatriate Zulu's body.

It's a sad loss for the foundation, as it is for all his friends, family and the rest of South Africa. Its a huge tragedy for us.

Neeran Naidoo, Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesperson
