ICASA warns SABC over decision to defy broadcast ban ruling

ICASA (Independent Communications Authority of South Africa) has warned the SABC (South African Broadcasting Cooperation) to lift the ban on broadcasting footage of public destruction of property.

According to a report by EWN (Eyewitness News), the regulatory authority wrote a letter to the national broadcaster to desist from further contravening its ruling. Earlier this month, ICASA announced in a statement that it recommends 'the SABC withdraw its resolution as published in its statement of 26 May 2016, which states that the SABC will no longer broadcast footage of destruction of public property during protests.'

However, COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng, has defied the ruling saying the SABC would approach the Constitutional Court to challenge the ruling.

SABC has been marred by a string of controversies under Motsoeneng's leadership, whose appointment was declared 'irrational' by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela after he was exposed for lying about his qualifications.

In a developing story, SABC journalists who approached the Labour Court after they were suspended by Motsoeneng have recently been fired. The journalists had expressed concern regarding the national broadcaster's editorial policy.
