#FridayStandIn: Psychoanalyst Mark Solms says he is fascinated by the brain

Meet Mark Solms, psychoanalyst and farmer, who says he is fascinated by the brain, and hopes to chat about that as #FridayStandIn this week.

He is the chairperson of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, Departments of Psychology and Neurology, and is the President of the South African Psychoanalytical Association.

As a psychoanalyst and a professor in neuropsychology, Solms is also known for his interest in integration of modern neuroscience with psychoanalytic theories and methods.

Outside academia, he works on his family heritage, a farm in Franschhoek, where wine has been produced over the past four centuries. Wine making, inevitably, is one of his passions.

His family farm’s history is deeply rooted in slavery, but Solms has taken a refreshing approach. With his unique ethos, he decided to run the farm in a very different way.

All 180 inhabitants of the land, and previously disadvantaged farm workers are empowered through co-ownership, along with Solms and British philanthropist Richard Astor.

For Mark, the emphasis is not only on the quality of the final product, but also on ensuring the farm-workers live fulfilled lives.
