Once loyal Zimbabwean war vets turn on Mugabe

In Zimbabwe the country’s National Liberation War Veterans Association has now turned its back on President Robert Mugabe, saying it no longer supports him.

Ryan Truscott, EWN Zimbabwe Correspondent, says the war veterans have released a hard hitting statement, where they accuse him of 'presiding over corruption and mismanagement', which have led to economic ruin.

They accused him of abandoning the masses and practicing divide and rule tactics in the party and dictatorial tendencies.

The association says it will no longer support him as presidential candidate in any future elections.

Truscott says these were harsh and unexpected words from this quarter, who had returned to the fore in 2000, leading land invasions and forming a vanguard for ruling party election campaigns in the rural areas.

He says it seems Mugabe is now relying increasingly for support among the youth, who may have taken over this role from the war vets.

In fact, the first confiscation of land and payouts which lead to the initial economic crash, benefited the war veterans at the time.

This recent turn around is a significant shift.
