DA accuses City of Joburg of inflating ad spend ahead of elections

Just 10 days before municipal elections, the DA has accused the ANC-run City of Johannesburg of tripling its advertising spend since 2015.

DA mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba says the party commissioned research company Nielsen for the City's advertising figures from the last few months.

According to Mashaba, the ad spend ballooned from R26 million in 2015 to R62 million over the same period of time in 2016.

He says this does not include the financing of billboards that promote current mayor Parks Tau as the "the best mayor that the country has ever seen."

We've been really concerned about the spiral of advertising in the City of Joburg... This is really quite worrying.

Mashaba is adamant that the City is only highlighting its successes, while covering up short-comings such as the rise of unemployment in the metro.

The DA laid a complaint with the Independent Electoral Comission (IEC), but the municipality has defended itself against these allegations.

City spokesperson Nthatisi Madingoane has refrained from commenting on political battles.

According to Madingoane, the City has boosted advertising in response to requests for stronger communication from residents.

We are supposed to make sure that the people of Johannesburg are informed and notified on an ongoing basis.
