ANC denies spending hefty R1bn on its election campaign

The ANC has distanced itself from a statement made by head of campaigns Nomvula Mokonyane that the party has spent over R1 billion on electioneering.

ANC's National Treasurer Zweli Mkhize says the ruling party is not obligated to disclose the amount spent on campaigning for votes ahead of the municipal elections.

Mkhize says the party is only accountable to internal party structures, regarding campaign reports and other financial statements.

We are responsible to the membership through the specific structures...It's sensitive and very internal to the running of the organisation.

He says the electorate is entitled to what the ANC delivers in terms of basic services.

Mkhize suggests that Mokonyane's estimated R1 billion was not a concrete figure, but rather used as a "figure of speech".

It's not an accounting statement that she made.

Mkhize added that embattled Western Cape ANC leader Marius Fransman was still suspended, pending an internal national disciplinary hearing, despite reports.

He insists that the conflicting statements on Fransman's re-appointment are due to miscommunication.
