Acting Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says the police are investigating how the truck found with 57 children from Malawi got to South Africa.
Three men have been arrested and charged with the human trafficking of 18 girls and 39 boys, aged between 13 and 21.
Phahlane says the North West police going about their normal duties when they stopped the truck.
When there was an element of resistance from the driver and those in the truck, they insisted on having truck searched. When they opened, unfortunately, two of those kids dropped on the ground.— Khomotso Phahlane, acting national police commissioner
He says he believes there is a syndicate or organised group who had been working with the suspects.
These children each of them was given an amount between R2000 and R2500, which will tell you that there is some organised crime.— Khomotso Phahlane, acting national police commissioner
