We take strict action on anyone found guilty of corporal punishment and we have good reporting mechanisms in place for learners to report these incidents.

More than 200 teachers were charged with assault by the department in the past year, Schafer confirmed on Tuesday.

The education MEC said forms of corporal punishment that are punishable include physical acts that may cause discomfort or pain, using any kind of stick, belt or cane.
