Gender Commission: School textbook promoting rape culture a setback for equality

There have been strong objects on social media to a Grade 10 Life Orientation textbook which is said to be perpetuating rape culture through a written activity.

It has been argued that the exercise questions imply that women are complicit in the acts of sexual violence forced upon them.

Gender Equality Commissioner Mbuyiselo Botha says the exercise sends the incorrect message to teenage girls and could dissuade young victims from reporting any forms of harassment.

These are incidents that take back the gains of gender equality and women empowerment in our country.

Botha adds that the exercise also legitimises rape culture by creating the impression that female bodies are for men to regulate.

It gives men unwarranted licenses that girls and women's bodies belong to us, we own them.
