Hawks boss Berning Ntlemeza says 'nonsensical' political killings must end

Hawks head Berning Ntlemeza has condemned the alarming number of politically motivated crimes and says a specialised task team is working to curb the violence.

Just days before the local government elections, Ntlemeza and Police Minister Nathi Nhleko announced that there have been 25 politically connected acts of violence in the country.

Fourteen of those incidents are murder and attempted murder cases, the majority of which took place in KwaZulu-Natal where 12 ANC leaders have been killed in the last two months.

Nhleko said that hired hitmen with links to the taxi industry are suspected to be involved in KwaZulu-Natal, however Ntlemeza says there is no direct involvement.

I don't recall... It was just some sort of misinterpretation. We never said the taxi industry is involved.

Ntlemeza says he cannot ensure that there will be no politically motivated violence before the municipal elections.

He adds that a number of the suspects have been arrested in relation to the attacks.

Ntlemeza says that arrests have been made in connection with the Simon’s Town Naval Base burglary in which firearms and ammunition was stolen.
