ANC and DA trade blows over racial politics

The ANC is adamant that it's not feeling threatened by the DA, its official opposition, ahead of the local government elections on Wednesday.

ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte says DA leader Mmusi Maimane has spent his entire campaign insulting ANC President Jacob Zuma.

We hope that South Africans will walk away from this man (Maimane), because he is a stooge...Many of us feel that he's pathetic and we feel sorry for him.

Duarte says the ruling party has avoided arrogance and measured their prospects carefully, unlike the DA.

Meanwhile, Maimane's spokesman Mabine Seabe says the ANC has had the same "race card" rhetoric since the start of their campaign.

He says the ruling party is clearly threatened by the DA's inroads with its "message for change."

They don't believe that black people and white people can work together, or that a black person can lead white people.

According to Seabe, the ANC is losing legitimacy in communities where it used to hold majority.
