Maimane blames ANC for 'misconstrued' statement on 1999 vote

DA leader Mmusi Maimane was at the centre of a social media storm on Monday after saying that he voted for the ANC in 1999, for Nelson Mandela.

Maimane was speaking at the party’s final Phetogo rally at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.

South Africans on Twitter called him out for the statement and questioned whether or not Maimane is telling the truth.

The end result was a long, trending Twitter thread mocking the political leader, titled "ThingsMmusiDid".

Maimane has accused the ANC of spreading false information from his speech, suggesting that he voted in 1994 (at age 13), reports EWN's Xolani Koyana.

He says some within the ruling party have started a campaign to spread the false statement.

Maimane also maintains that the opposition party is unapologetic about using Mandela in its election campaign.
