Residents of Vuwani have decided to abstain from voting at the 2016 local government elections to express their dissatisfaction with government.
The Limpopo village was a site of violence when protesters burned and vandalised more than 21 schools after a decision by the Municipal Demarcations Board to merge the area with Malamulele District.
Vuwani is one of more 600 areas identified as high risk areas, with over 1 000 police officials deployed to the there.
702's John Robbie spoke to EWN Reporter, Masa Kekana, regarding recent developments in the area.
Listen to the conversation below:
Some streets are barricaded but there aren't any groups or gatherings of people at the moment.— Masa Kekana, EWN reporter
Residents were saying they will not be going out to vote and it's a unanimous decision, neither will they be stopping the IEC from coming in.— Masa Kekana, EWN reporter
Meanwhile, callers shared their experiences at voting stations across the country. A few voting stations opened slightly behind schedule without any reports of major glitches.
