Voting results will hint at 2019 general election odds - analyst

The day has arrived for South Africans to cast their vote in the local government elections.

Public Law expert and political analyst Richard Calland says the municipal vote stands as a referendum for the progress of the national ruling party.

It's inevitably a referendum on the performance of the ruling party nationally. The local government election tends to give a strong indication for the national elections.

Richard Calland, political analyst

According to Calland, the outcome of the municipal vote will foreshadow the outcome of votes in the 2019 general election.

He says that the ANC's use of negative rhetoric in its campaign shows that the party is feeling under pressure.

He says that the DA has to use this election to make political strides in other metropoles.

Three things the DA must do to prove itself, according to Calland:

  • win at least one more major metropole, or put themselves into government in Tshwane or Nelson Mandela Bay.
  • move closer to holding 30% of the vote nationally.
  • show that they are winning more than 10% of black working-class votes across the country.
