Long haul for ANC and DA due to lengthy vote counting in dense metros

Early results show the Democratic Alliance (DA) seems to be making an impact as results trickle in slowly from the Results Operations Center for the 2016 local government elections.

However, current results are expected to swing significantly as a lot more ballots are still to be counted in the country's most dense metropolitican areas.

Voting stations officially closed at 7pm on Wednesday evening, while some remained open until all South Africans placed their votes across the country.

702's John Robbie spoke to EWN reporter, Stephen Grootes, regarding his analysis as the results trickle in.

The official opposition and the governing party, the African National Congress (ANC), are set to go head-to-head in the big metropolitan areas of Nelson Mandela Bay, City of Tshwane and City of Joburg.

He emphasised that the significance of these particular elections, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) likely to play a king-maker role as a new-entry opposition party.

Listen to the interview below:

He said while current figures show the Democratic Alliance being significantly ahead of the African National Congress in urban areas such as Nelson Mandela Bay and City of Tshwane, the disparities would also change significantly as vote counting takes longer in dense areas.

Urban areas tend to get counted first, but they also have higher population and have more votes to count. It's going to take longer

Stephen Grootes, EWN reporter

The big difference with these elections is that at this stage in 2011, we knew the results already without really doing the counting.
