Zille: DA eager to snatch the reins from ANC in major councils

Western Cape Premier and former DA leader, Helen Zille, says she is extremely happy with the preliminary election results, and looks forward to overtaking the ANC in several municipal councils.

It looks as if we're going to take many councils off the ANC for the very first time.

Early results show the DA making significant gains in the West Coast District Municipality and southern Namaqualand in local councils such as Matzikama and Cederburg where the ANC governs.

According to Zille, the DA is bleeding into the Eastern Cape and Nothern Cape, where neighbouring councils are recognising their strong ability to govern.

Zille says that the DA is willing to negotiate productive coalitions in hotly contested metros Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane or Johannesburg.

If there's a chance of us governing well, we should take that chance. But we must be sure.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

On Wednesday evening Zille was in hot water on social media after she posted a tweet deemed racist by many on Twitter.

The tweet was in response to a series of election-related articles published in the Cape Argus, written by black student leaders at UCT.

The tweet was posted after voting stations were closed, and Zille has since come under fire online.
