IEC's 22 000 officials working around the clock to tally votes

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) deployed 22 000 officials to preside over the 2016 local government elections this year.

The officials have ensured that votes were cast seamlessly at most of the polls. They have also been working around the clock to tally the votes as they come in from thousands of voting stations across the country...

702's Azania Mosaka spoke to Chief Communication Officer of the IEC, Kate Bapela, about the work that has gone into putting the election together.

Over 26 million South African's registered to vote this year. The IEC hopes that they've exceeded the 58% voter turn out reached in the 2011 municipal elections.

We have more than 22 000 officials who are waking up very early. When we say you're late, we mean 3 o'clock in the morning.

Kate Bapela, Independent Electoral Commission

She emphasised the importance of following procedures meticulously as votes are being counted, saying that political party agents and local and international election observers are overseeing processes.

When it comes to the voters' roll, Gauteng has the highest number of voters... We allow our officials to take their time with the counting.
