ANC leaders may 'reboot' and find exit plan for Zuma post elections - analyst

There have been calls in the past for President Jacob Zuma to step down, following the firing of former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and controversy around the President's homestead in Nkandla. The requests fell on deaf ears and now the ANC is reaping the fruits of the decision to keep him on.

But what are the possibilities of the President stepping down now that the party seems to be losing, especially in big metros?

If the ANC is not able to cobble together a coalition in Tshwane and in Nelson Mandela Bay ... then Jacob Zuma will effectively find himself in a very difficult position.

Daniel Silke, Political analyst

It will rest on the ability of the ANC to exert the broad power and for President Zuma to step in when it comes to coalition building and negotiations over the next week or two.

Daniel Silke, Political analyst

Silke says the longevity of President Zuma right now, lies in his ability to build a coalition. The president's need to build coalitions, will put pressure on him.

The EFF has stated categorically that it will not enter into coalitions with the ANC post elections.

It is possible ANC leadership may feel the need to 'reboot' in order to put them in a better position for 2019 elections, predicts Silke.

The question is what kind of exit strategy can you provide for Jacob Zuma and can it be a dignified exit rather than an undignified exit of Thabo Mbeki?
