A tight race for ANC and DA in Joburg, Tshwane

The ANC and the DA are neck-and-neck in Tshwane and Johannesburg.

EWN's Stephen Grootes says these municipal elections are a lesson for South Africa on how to manage fierce amounts of political contestation.

It's a tight race in Johannesburg, the DA is on 41.72%, the ANC has 41.84% and the Economic Freedom Fighters has 10.81%.

Both the ANC and DA have over 700 000 votes each, with 70% of the ballot papers counted so far.

This shows how close the election is. We never had really seen this in South Africa, it's an important time for us.

Stephen Grootes

According to Stephen Grootes, urban residents have used the municipal vote as referendum on President Jacob Zuma's rule, while others were swayed by Thabo Mbeki's controversial appearance with EFF leadership earlier this week.

In Tshwane, the DA is in the lead with 43.49%, the ruling party is on 41.91% and the red berets are on 10.57%.

The DA has already claimed to have a majority of votes in Nelson Mandela Bay. With at least 98% of the vote counted in that metro, the official opposition has 46.56% of the vote there while the ruling party has 40.99%.

As of 7am, 91% of the voting districts were counted in the country.
