Karima Brown: This is the biggest wake up call for the ANC

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will face the same challenges that led to the African National Congress (ANC) loss in Nelson Mandela Bay says Group Executive Editor of Independent News, Karima Brown.

This comes after the party declared a victory in the metropolitan municipality, which saw less than 60% voters turning up at voting stations in August 3 local government elections.

According to Brown, the official opposition has a poor track record in governing areas where poor black people reside. She cites impoverished areas like Khayelitsha and Manenberg in Cape Town, which are in stark contrast to the Mother City's leafy urban suburbs.

702/Cape Talk's stand in for The Redi Tlhabi Show, Eusebius McKaiser, spoke to her on South Africa's political landscape as official tally the remaining votes.

Listen to the interview below:

It's the biggest wake up call for the ruling party... We've seen the first sign that the ANC is not unassailable.

Brown said the DA will be challenged in the same way the ANC was in job creation and developing small business.

The DA is now going to have to run a municipality where the majority if the people are poor and young people don't have skills. The DA's record in governing black areas isn't that impressive.
