ANCWL have become the gatekeepers of patriarchy - gender activist

President of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) Bathabile Dlamini missed the point of the silent anti-rape protests held over the weekend, says political analyst and gender activist Nomboniso Gasa.

Four women staged the silent anti-rape protest during President Jacob Zuma’s IEC address, marking 10 years since his controversial 2006 rape trial.

The group held up placards reading, "I am one in three", "Khanga", "RememberKhwezi" during Zuma’s speech on Saturday night.

The ANCWL has criticised the women for using the wrong protest platform, and allowing themselves to be used for what it says was a political ploy.

According to Gasa, Dlamini and the ANCWL lack an understanding of gender-based violence, patriarchy and the importance of constitutional democracy.

It seems that the ANCWL has decided to be the gatekeepers of patriarchy and President Zuma's abuse of power.

Nomboniso Gasa, political analyst and gender activist

She says the ANCWL has reduced itself to an insignificant appendage that constantly seeks instruction and approval from the ruling party.
