MPs grill Public Protector hopefuls under Corruption Watch close scrutiny

Members of Parliament (MPs) have begun to interview the 14 shortlisted candidates for the position of the next Public Protector.

The hopefuls will be in the hot seat until Thursday midnight, explains EWN Parliamentary correspondent Gaye Davis.

However, civil group Corruption Watch has called into question the marathon interview process, which can be live streamed.

Davis explains that MPs have already dug into several candidates, including High Court judge Siraj Desai, who was asked about the controversial rape allegations leveled against him.

Advocate Michael Mthembu was earlier interrogated about a civil judgement against him that he did not disclose on his second attempt at becoming Public Protector.

High Court judge Sharise Weiner also opened up about her aspirations to become more involved in investigative process behind the legal system.

Meanwhile 77-year-old advocate Chris Mokoditwa has defended his age, adding that he is fit enough for the job.

Corruption Watch's Leanne Govindsamy says too many candidates were short-listed and the current knock-out interview process is not fair.
