Political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi says the African National Congress (ANC) has two things that are not reconcilable.
The ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) is meeting for the first after the local government elections, which saw the parties losing majority in three metros.
It's going to be very difficult to reconcile on one hand the interest of the president, particularly the imperative for his political survival and on the other, the imperative for the ANC to renew itself.— Aubrey Matshiqi, political analyst
Matshiqi says he suspects those who support the president will ask the ANC to take collective responsibility for what happened during the elections, and avoid a resolution by the NEC which blames the president.
While they fear that by calling on the party to recall the president in order to arrest the damage that may be caused in future, they must also fear the possibility that by not recalling him, they may end up suffering what they are trying to avoid now.— Aubrey Matshiqi, political analyst
He says the image crisis of the president might do even more damage to the electoral interest of the ANC in 2019 national government elections.
