SA celebrates Wayde van Niekerk's world record victory

Sprinter Wayde van Niekerk broke a 17-year record to win the 400 metre final at the Rio Olympics, securing Team South Africa's first gold medal at the Games.

Despite lining up in lane eight, van Niekerk won the race on Sunday night and crossed cross the line in 43:03 seconds.

EWN Sport editor Jean Smyth has described the performance as sublime and says van Niekerk's win has put South Africa in international headlines.

Van Niekerk's win pushes Team SA's medals tally to seven - one gold, five silvers and one bronze so far.
