'Empty justice' as Zephany Nurse's kidnapper sentenced to 10 years behind bars

The accused in the Zephany Nurse kidnapping case has been sentenced to an effective 10 years imprisonment.

The 52-year-old was sentenced in the Western Cape High Court for snatching the then three-day-old infant from the Groote Schuur Hospital in 1997.

Earlier this year, Judge John Hlophe found the Lavender Hill resident guilty of kidnapping, fraud and of contravening sections of the Children’s Act.

Hlophe said the convicted kidnapper had ample time to show remorse and return Zephany to her biological family, reports EWN's Shamiela Fisher.

The kidnapper's relatives say Zephany wants nothing to do with her biological family because of the remarks they've made about the man who raised her.

Biological father Morne Nurse hopes to rebuild a relationship with his daughter, but mother Celeste Nurse says the damage has already been done.

Child law expert Annette Van der Merwe explains that justice is a very complicated concept in this case.

She says that the court may have to facilitate counselling and restorative mediation between all parties after what she describes as empty justice.

There's a long and difficult road ahead for the Nurse's, Zephany and the other family.
