Police watch from afar as miners pay tribute to victims of Marikana

Members of the mining union Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) are in Marikana to commemorate their colleagues who died during protest action four years ago.

Lonmin mine workers embarked on an unprotected strike in 2012, demanding a minimum wage of R12,500.

A total of 44 people were killed during the protest, 34 of them by police, and the massacre led to an inquiry into National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega.

Some small groups have gathered marching and chanting the same songs that were sung in 2012, while others have gathered at the Marikana koppie recreating the scenes, reports EWN's Gia Nicolaides.

A stage has been erected by Amcu in the middle of the veld near where the Lonmin mine workers were gunned down.

Nicolaides explains that, despite various investigations and suspensions, miners still feel that real justice has not been served.

While there's a hive of activity here, the community as a whole doesn't believe that much has changed in four years.
