Raising a happy child vs a high achieving child

Should a parent focus on raising a happy child or a high achieving child?

Lesego Mashishi-Matlala, Director of Limitless Occupational Therapy Services, believes that parents should raise children to be well-rounded adults, and put emphasis on the journey to get to an end goal.

According to Mashishi-Matlala, this approach can ensure a child is happy while reaching personal milestones.

Mashishi -Matlala spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo about what a parent's objective should be between raising a happy child or a high achieving child.

Listen to the conversation below:

The greatest misconception about children's achievements and fulfillment in life is basing it on what our academic system is at the moment

Lesego Mashishi-Matlala, Director of Limitless Occupational Therapy Services

Its just a change in mindset for parents to put an emphasis to an end goal as an achievement in itself, as opposed to getting an 'A' or a 'Gold'

Lesego Mashishi-Matlala, Director of Limitless Occupational Therapy Services

We must also not take away the positive feeling that children have accomplished something great. But what is important is encouraging children to explore a vast number of things so they can identify what they are particularly good at and master that particular thing
