Team SA shining, despite intense pressure and spotlight - Elana Meyer

Veteran Olympian Elana Meyer says Team South Africa has flown the flag high, despite the extreme pressure they face at the Games.

International media have questioned track star Caster Semenya's eligibility to compete, while also criticising swimmer Chad le Clos' performance and head space at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Despite this, Team SA's medal haul now stands at nine - one gold, 6 silver and two bronze - after Sunette Viljoen's latest silver win for the women's javelin.

Meyer explains that there are high expectations for the athletes to perform, in addition to media scrutiny which adds to the spotlight.

She says it is also an intimidating experience to encounter the world's top athletes at the Olympic village, particularly as a first-time contender.

There's huge expectation, not only from yourself, but from your country... It's a tough environment.

Elana Meyer, Veteran Olympian

It's definitely one of the best ever Olympics from a South African perspective.
