Meet the South African woman going to Mars in 10 years

Since childhood Dr Adriana Marais has dreamed of living on another planet. She is currently one of the 100 Mars One Project astronaut candidates in the running to move to the red planet in 2026.

Marais is looking forward to continue her research on Mars and possibly even contribute to the discovery of evidence that life once existed there.

She is currently busy preparing for her departure, getting training on farming and agriculture to make sure they are able to survive on Mars. She is also acquiring other necessary skills such as medical training, basic scientific and engineering skills to maintain the equipment they will be using.

Marais says the possibility to contribute to human knowledge and longing to discover the unknown is what pushes her into this 'crazy dream'.

From the personal level to all the way to the level of society, we put ourselves out of our comfort zones, we gain huge amount of knowledge and experience and basically grow as people or as societies. Humans have explored the boundaries of what was known.

I would be prepared to sacrifice returning to Earth for the possibility of being one to establish a new society on a new planet. As a scientist there will be so much do there. I think I will be happy to spend the rest of my life there.
