Westbury and Newclare peace facilitator urges government to intervene

Former Fast Guns Gang leader and peace facilitator in Westbury and Newclare, Peter Faver, urges government to intervene in what he calls a 'volatile situation' in these areas.

Yesterday community members took matters to their own hands and led the illegal protest march to the Sophiatown Police Station.

The illegal protest was a follow-up on the march that took place two months ago, when the community raised concerns over the drug, crime, corruption problems and an escalation in crime.

Faver says the violence is only among the coloured community, and the police in the area cannot be trusted.

This crime, I was also part and parcel of it, it really enriched us and we started having a good life. But the problem now is that the ones that are being short remain in poverty constricted community.

Peter Faver, former gang leader and peace facilitator

According to the community member, Shaheem Ismael, the escalating violence and gangsterism in the area has resulted to over 35 deaths in two months.
