Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng on why new forms of student activism are important

Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng, Deputy Vice Chancellor at UCT, is due to speak at the 2016 LeadSA Changemakers conference at the Century City Conference Centre, in Cape Town.

Phakeng will explore the triple helix of activism on university campuses in South Africa.

Young people have faced major criticism in recent months for their demonstrations in an effort to bring about change in higher education.

She says that, despite the complexities of this new wave of activism, she is excited to see young people engage is social issues.

Phakeng explains that student movements are transforming the misconception that young people are apathetic and politically disengaged.

I think this new activism that we are seeing is important.

Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng, Deputy Vice Chancellor at UCT

She says there are meaningful lessons to learn through the various modes of student engagement, and the communities involved.

We need all our young people to get involved because what this new activism that we're seeing becomes, depends on who is participating.
