Commotion in Joburg chambers as councillors prepare to vote for mayor

The EFF caucus disrupted the inaugural council meeting proceedings where the Joburg mayor, chief whip and speaker of the council will be officially sworn in.

They wanted to halt proceedings and have ANC councilor Dan Bovu arrested after an alleged bribery attempt.

The EFF claims Bovu has offered several of its councillors money amounting to R500,000 in exchange for them to vote for the ANC at today’s council meeting.

At the same time, EWN has gained exclusive access to legal documentation from Bovu's lawyers, instructing the EFF to retract their accusations or face defamation charges.

Meanwhile, disgruntled EFF supporters outside the City Hall and online have accused the red berets of selling out by vowing to vote with the DA.

EWN's Masa Kekana explains that there are claims that the apparent EFF supporters were paid by the ANC to conduct the protest.

An alleged smear campaign surfaced on Twitter, under the trending hashtag "EFF Sold My Vote."

The process of swearing in councillors has been concluded. DA mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba was mostly cheered on in the chambers, while the ANC's Parks Tau was heckled, reports EWN's Clement Manyathela.

Manyathela says there are constant interruptions at the ceremony with EFF members singing ANC's trademark election song "Asinavalo".
