Herman Mashaba is the new Joburg Mayor

Herman Mashaba has been elected as the new Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

Democratic Alliance (DA) members broke out in song and lifted Mashaba in the air as voting for Joburg Mayor at the city's inaugural council sitting concluded.

Mashaba received 144 council votes while former Mayor Parks Tau received 125 votes.

In the vote for Chief Whip, the DA's Kevin Wax received 146 votes, while the ANC's Solomon Mogase received 123 votes.

Earlier, Vasco Da Gama was elected as Speaker of the Joburg City Council.

There was no majority party in Johannesburg after the municipal elections, as the ANC had won just over 44% of votes and the DA just over 38%.

The DA entered into a coalition with the Congress of the People (Cope), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), United Democratic Movement (UDM), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus), in the country's hung municipalities.

Despite refusing to join a coalition, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had declared that it would help the DA to take the City of Joburg and Tshwane.
