Promises Mashaba made before taking office

Fighting corruption and doing away with Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws and policies are some of the promises Herman Mashaba made prior to him occupying Joburg's hot seat on Monday.

The Democratic Alliance's newly-elected City of Joburg's executive mayor spoke to 702/Cape Talk's Redi Tlhabi earlier this year to set the record straight on his position and what he intended to do should he be elected into office.

On the question of racial classification laws and policies, Mashaba said he would look to do away with them as he claims they do more to divide the nation rather than uniting it.

I would do it yesterday and not today if I had the powers. Because we need legislative frameworks that must get us as a society to really progress and be united.

He referred to overcrowding in Johannesburg's townships, making specific reference to Alexandra as an example of the ANC's failure to deliver services to impoverished communities.

Education is such a key component of empowering our people. Those are the programmes we need to focus on.

The importance of stimulating economic growth was a concern for him as the poorest suffer the most.

I'm sure we are all aware that we really need to grow this economy so that people of Alexandra and Soweto can benefit.

He said the country's high corruption rates needed to be tackled with urgency.

Today, South Africa is regarded as the corruption capital of the world. And I must sit back and say that things are okay. Things are very far from being okay.
