Judith February gives Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane the thumbs up

It was Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's name recommended to the National Assembly as the next public Protector replacing Thuli Madonsela.

Initially when the shortlisting started, Judge Siraj Desai emerged as the front runner and had a strong backing from ANC but he was easily discarded by all the other parties.

Judith February, Senior research associate at the Institute for Security Studies says that Adv Mkhwebane's interview was good but the Judge Desai's interview was somewhat poor.

She says Adv Mkhwebane was an excellent candidate in that she handled herself very well and did not break under pressure and scrutiny.

There was no doubt that Judge Desai was the front runner, the ANC within the committee were clearly backing him...

But frankly Judge Desai interviewed so poorly, he lost his temper and had to apologise for that... it became difficult for the ANC to push his name forward when there was no opposition support

February says that during her interview Mkhwebane could not explain her move from a senior position in Home Affairs to the state agency position as an analyst and that nearly set her back.

I do feel we need to give benefit of a doubt. One would hope that someone with a state security background she is not going to want to pivot to secrecy.
