Gordhan vs Hawks isn't something for the Presidency to deal with: analyst

The matter between Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and the Hawks is not something for the Presidency to deal with, because it is not about Minister Gordhan's current role as the head of National Treasury.

Ottilia Maunganidze, senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), says that the Presidency could possibly intervene through the President's Coordinatint Council if a determination is made that there is a dispute between two inter-governmental organisations.

In the midst of calls for President Jacob Zuma to act on the matter between Minister Gordhan and the Hawks, which stems from the directorate's investigation on the Finance Minister and former South African Revenue Services (Sars) officials, the Presidency says that it does not have powers to stop any investigations into any individual.

Speaking to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo, Maunganidze described what limits President Jacob Zuma to take action in the matter between Minister Gordhan and the Hawks, and what the President could possibly do.

The intervention (by the President's Coordinating Council) would be around a dispute that is between the Ministry of FInance and the Hawks. But that's not the dispute
