"It is quite clear the NEC has lost control of the situation," Ranjeni Munsamy

Daily Maverick's Ranjeni Munsamy says after Thursday's hard hitting speech by ANC's Sipho Pityana, more people will be emboldened to speak out about the deteriorating situation in the country.

There have been some veterans speaking out over the past few months, particularly around the ConCourt judgment, she says, but they appeared to be voices in the wilderness.

I can't remember any ANC leader or even a member, speaking in the way Sipjo Pityana spoke out yesterday, and delivering it directly to at least four of the ANC's top six leaders and a host of Members of Cabinet. They got it directly in their faces.

Munsamy says an early conference may well be seen as the only avenue now.

It is quite clear the NEC has lost control of the situation. They are no longer able to tap into the sentiments of the broad ANC membership and have consistently taken wrong decisions.

She says the biggest problem with the NEC, is they are beholden to the President, and cannot deal with the situation impartially.

People are realising the only way forward is to open up discussion to the broad membership.

But, she says, the factional battles make it difficult to vouch for the integrity of the ANC branches at this stage, and so it will not be easy to call an early conference soon.

Because the battle will then be about the credentials of people that are there.

Ranjeni Munsamy, Daily Maverick Associate Editor

There could be a very real danger of such a conference crumbling because of the massive disagreements.

She says she does not think there is anyone in the ANC right now who has the authority to command the respect and control needed in such a situation with potentially 4 000 members in a state of rebellion.
