Medical aids do cough up for psychotherapy, just not always long term

William Griffiths, Chairperson of the Clinical Psychology Forum, told Stephen Grootes that most medical aids do reimburse for psychotherapy.

There are only certain schemes that stopped reimbursing education and counselling psychologists, but clinical psychologists are still being reimbursed.

Griffiths says clinical psychology has a great deal to offer in treating mental health care, so it would be beneficial if more funds were made available.

But he says, psychotherapy is not a quick fix. It is a long term process and commitment between patient and therapist, and medical aids often only reimburse for a limited amount of 15 sessions.

People often end up paying for longer term treatment out of their own pockets when they see the benefit of psychotherapy.
