Do's and don'ts of workplace relationships

Good or bad friendships affect all aspects of life, including the workplace, social life and emotionally.

According to psychologist Dr Schomer when people work well together and there is less acrimony and misunderstandings, it creates a good flow.

He says when people feel they are not welcome or wanted, the more energy they spend on trying to feel productive at work.

Be clear, one thing we don't want to scoot around is role conflict, role confusion and role ambiguity.

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

When people are working in communal spaces, Dr Schomer says the first thing they need is respect for each other's knowledge and ideas.

He says if a friendship develops while doing your tasks, it is a good thing as long as it doesn't hinder anyone from doing their task well.

When you fall in love with a colleague you want to hold them, hug them and that might lead to 'I favour you at work', I give you more inside intimate information close to the core than somebody else working close to me

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

He says if there is no clarity and strictness in relations, the core information can easily be abused.

Dr Schomer also spoke about romance in the workplace and says romance is fine as long the two involved have clarity on their functionalities and behaviour when in the office. If the boundaries are blur, Dr Schomer says that relationship becomes a public affair and something everybody talks about.

Public affair can hinder you from doing your work if there is gossip, jealousy, conflict, role conflict and envy...
