ANC says it warned against Gordhan vs Hawks matter

African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says that the party is concerned about a trial by media which is driven by prominent investigations or arrests.

The party's Deputy Secretary-General Jesse Duarte and the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) have recently commented on the matter between Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and the Hawks, intimating that Gordhan is undermining the law by not making a warning statement with the Hawks.

Kodwa says that when the the Hawks' 27 questions to Minister Gordhan were leaked to the media, the ANC warned that this would cause a long-term problem.

That's what we had to deal with the Scorpions, when there is a prominent arrest or investigation, the trial runs to the media. We said that creates a problem

Zizi Kodwa, ANC spokesperson

Speaking to 702's Xolani Gwala, Kodwa says that the ANC encourages Minister Gordhan and National Treasury to not isolate themselves from government in light of recent events.

We don't want them to isolate themselves from the rest of government and see themselves as victims, because that will create problems

Zizi Kodwa, ANC spokesperson

While saying that Duarte was within her rights to express her views on the matter between Minister Gordhan and the Hawks, Kodwa said that the MKMVA's statements were unfortunate.

It was unfortunate and regrettable the MKMVA joined the fray. But secondly, it was a bad choice that they allowed Comrade van Rooyen (to speak), despite his standing in the MKVA

Zizi Kodwa, ANC spokesperson

Analysing Kodwa's statements, Professor Tinyiko Maluleke says that the ANC is at war with itself, and that the party has much work to do to unite the party.

The picture of a government and political party at war with itself is really the best description of what's been happening. That description doesn't come from me, it comes from Cyril Ramaphosa
